Exchanging experiences

Is there a diversity of cultures and practices of public policy evaluation in Europe? How can such a rich variety be used in constructing the future of evaluation?

The symposium shall explore the diversity of analyses and approaches to evaluating the effectiveness of public policy and programmes in Europe on a local, regional, national and EU level.

The focus shall be the respective roles of the executive, the legislative, expertise and the citizens. What are relationships between them? What are the political, institutional and historic stakes for each country and at the EU level?

This will be the occasion to strengthen connections within the evaluator community and to enhance the institutional foundations of evaluation.

The Société Française de l’Évaluation and the DeGEval-Gesellschaft für Evaluation (in Germany and Austria) are pleased to welcome you at the European Parliament, one of the political hearts of Europe, for this event, which part of the official agenda of the French Presidency of the European Union for 2008.

The second objective is to provide young scholars with the opportunity to discuss their own ongoing applied research in public organizations with leading researchers in the field in a relaxed and open atmosphere. To accomplish this purpose, the students will have the opportunity to present their applied research work at sessions attended both by the invited lecturers and by IEB researchers.

APRIL 2008

ECPR Joint Session on Remittances, Public Policy and the State in Rennes, France from 11. April 2008 to 16. April 2008

Abstract: Academics and policy consultants of international organizations are increasingly aware of the importance of workers’ remittances for poor countries. There are now numerous accounts of the causes and (economic) consequences of remittances. We do, however, know substantively less about how national and local governments try to manage these flows and whether they should do so from a normative point of view. And yet, governments more and more attempt to tap into this potential source of finance for development. The session invites contributions that seek to explain and/ or judge governments’ attempts to affect remittances, before, during and after remittances are sent in both the home and host countries of foreign workers. We are interested in the politico-economic determinants of these public interventions as well as their consequences. We also welcome contributions that show the relationship between remittances and related fields of study such as the political economy of international migration or of financial sector development in poor countries. We welcome approaches that make use of the tools of political economy (formal modelling, statistical analyses on international or sub-national data).

Deadline for proposals: 1/12/2007
